Tragic optimism is the opposite of toxic positivity. Instead of ignoring "negative" emotions with unrelenting optimism, which can harm our mental health in the long run, tragic optimism acknowledges that suffering is a part of the human experience. However, we can still find hope and meaning even in the face of adversity. Psychologist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl developed the concept of tragic optimism and perceived it as a way for people to view life's barriers as opportunities for growth, introspection, and a means for achieving human potential. This workshop will explore the concept of tragic optimism and provide strategies for meaning-making and resiliency in trying times.
This workshop is eligible for 1 DICE credit.
